What are space rovers?

Rovers are special research vehicles designed to explore terrains that are too dangerous or too far away for humans. Both on Mars and on the Moon you’ll find cars without drivers - controlled from Earth. They can travel over rocks, sand and craters, taking photos and collecting data.

A rover is equipped with cameras, robotic arms and tools for taking samples of rocks and soil. Thanks to these clever machines we’ve discovered many secrets of other worlds in our Solar System.

Fun facts about space rovers

The first successful rover on Mars was Sojourner in 1997 - it weighed only about 11 kilograms, less than some school backpacks!

During the Curiosity mission in 2012, scientists found evidence of ancient lakes on Mars - this completely changed how we think about the history of the Red Planet.

Modern rovers like Perseverance can collect rock samples and store them in special tubes so they can one day be brought back to Earth for detailed study.
